Hi All,
Caqelai (pronounced Thungalai) is most definitely off the tourist trail. It is just a dot in the Pacific ocean, an island without roads or shops or (most of the time) electricity. One of the more than 300 islands that comprise Fiji, it takes 15 minutes to walk around and has just enough beautiful beach and palm trees to support one very magic places to stay. There are maybe a dozen bures: traditional thatched huts of wooden posts and dried palm fronds; a rudimentary "shower room" open to the sky, with a barrel of water and a battered tin pan to slosh yourself; and a long, open-sided hall where everyone eats.
Three times a day the conch-shell bellows to call everyone to table.
In Caqelai, you can swim, sunbake or snorkel. If you go for a walk, you're back where you started in no time. The main activities are social, getting to know the other backpackers and locals, singing and playing music after dinner, and in Efrat's case - making the locals to dance with her ...
That was our little piece of heaven that we were looking for, imagine yourself the nice postcard you see, the cool calendar you get and amazing presentations you find in the e-mail of beautiful white sand beaches with coconut trees scattered around ... well, Caqelai is the place
Have fun,
Efrat and Yoni.
